Eating and Appetite

چکیده
Feeding can be defined as the behavioral response necessary for replenishing energy substrates to maintain energy balance and, ultimately, the survival of all organisms. Predictably, a shortage of food sources is associated with increased motivational states that promote food seeking, as well as metabolic changes that allow for energy stores to be amassed in the form of adipose tissue. In general, increases in these motivational states are commonly referred to as appetite (Berthoud and Morrison 2008). Feeding can also be elicited by the mere presence of food and, in the absence of a negative energy state, possibly as an adaptive behavioral response directed at storing excess energy in anticipation of future shortages. Clearly, the mechanisms regulating feeding behavior are complex and involve both regulatory and nonregulatory processes. Peripheral signals regulating energy balance. Both food intake and appetite are influenced by multiple neural and peripheral signals. These include energy substrates such as glucose, free fatty acids, and amino acids; hormones such as

Food volume effects on intake and appetite in women with binge-eating disorder and weight-matched controls.
OBJECTIVE Our study examined the effect of food volume on later intake and appetite ratings in 15 women with binge eating disorder (BED) and 15 healthy control women. METHOD On nonconsecutive days, lower-volume (250 ml/171 kcal) and higher-volume milk-based preloads (500 ml/171 kcal) were served in counterbalanced order. Thirty minutes later, appetite ratings and intake at a buffet-style test...

Objective. This study aimed to investigate potential differences in appetite sensations, ghrelin, peptide YY, and glucose and their relationship with energy and macronutrient intake in obese adolescents with subclinical binge eating disorder. Methods. Fifteen obese adolescents (six and nine individuals with and without subclinical binge eating disorder, resp.) qualified for this study. Visual a...

متن کاملDoes eating slowly influence appetite and energy intake when water intake is controlled?
BACKGROUND Slow eating has been associated with enhanced satiation, but also with increased water intake. Therefore, the role of water ingestion in regard to eating rate needs to be discerned. This study examined the influence of eating rate on appetite regulation and energy intake when water intake is controlled. METHODS In a randomized design, slow and fast eating rates were compared on two...
متن کاملHigher Eating Frequency Does Not Decrease Appetite in Healthy Adults.
BACKGROUND Consumption of small, frequent meals is suggested as an effective approach to control appetite and food intake and might be a strategy for weight loss or healthy weight maintenance. Despite much speculation on the topic, scientific evidence is limited to support such a relation in the absence of changes to diet composition. OBJECTIVE We examined the effects of high compared with lo...
متن کاملChanges in appetite, food preference, and eating habits in frontotemporal dementia and Alzheimer's disease.
BACKGROUND Despite numerous reports of changes in satiety, food preference, and eating habits in patients with frontotemporal dementia, there have been few systematic studies. OBJECTIVES To investigate the frequency of changes in eating behaviours and the sequence of development of eating behaviours in frontotemporal dementia and Alzheimer's disease, using a caregiver questionnaire. METHODS...
